What are the types of batteries used in vacuum cleaners?
Portable cordless vacuum cleaners rely heavily on their vacuum cleaner batteries. If the battery pack on your cordless vacuum cleaner fails quickly, even if you have the best vacuum cleaner on paper, you will not be satisfied with it.
The most common types of batteries used in cordless vacuum cleaners are:
Lead-Acid Batteries
Older cordless vacuum cleaners and vacuum cleaners where weight isn’t an issue usually use lead-acid batteries. The chemistry is the same as in car batteries, but the electrolytes are usually gels.
According to pickvacuumcleaner.com, gel cell batteries have an electrolyte that cannot be spilled and can be used in any position. Their capacity will decrease rapidly if discharged with high currents, but memory effects should not affect them.
Nickel Cadmium Batteries
There is no environmental benefit to using them. Lead-acid batteries have less relative capacity than lithium-ion batteries, especially at high discharge currents (greater than 1C).
Among NiCd batteries, NiCd batteries can discharge up to 50 C. However, vacuum cleaners rarely use these currents. In addition to being more expensive than lead-acid batteries, they are also prone to memory loss.

NIMH batteries
A cordless vacuum cleaner or other cordless appliance may have one of these batteries. The NiMH batteries in most modern appliances have a low self-discharge rate and can last for several months without losing any charge.
As a result, they are more environmentally friendly and have higher capacity than lead-acid or NiCd batteries, almost no memory effect (the manufacturers claim no memory effect, but occasionally it is necessary to recondition the battery’s capacity).
In battery-powered vacuum cleaners, they have largely replaced lead-acid and NiCd batteries because of their higher capacities and other advantages.
Vacuum Li-Ion batteries and polymer Li-Ion batteries
It’s a ‘high-end’ battery due to its capacity versus mass, memory effect, high discharge current, and long life. Among cordless vacuum cleaner batteries, they are the most expensive.
A lithium-ion battery has a high energy density, a small size, a light weight, and a long cycle life, allowing vacuum cleaners to have a light appearance and use batteries with ease.
